Justin Hawkins Returns to UNLV as Assistant Coach
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has announced the addition of former basketball player Justin Hawkins to head coach Josh Pastner’s inaugural coaching staff. This move reunites Hawkins with his alma mater, where he played from 2009 to 2013.
A Look at Hawkins’ Career
During his time at UNLV, Hawkins not only played a vital role as a team captain for two seasons but also contributed to the Rebels’ appearance in the NCAA Tournament throughout his collegiate career. However, the program has faced challenges in recent years, with the last tournament bid occurring during Hawkins’ senior year in 2013.
Prior to returning to UNLV, Hawkins spent the previous three seasons as a coach at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). His coaching journey began at Liberty High School and progressed through the ranks to collegiate levels, including a six-year tenure at the University of the Pacific.
The Complete Coaching Staff
Alongside Hawkins, Coach Pastner has assembled a robust coaching staff designed to invigorate the program. The lineup includes:
- Scott Garson: Associate head coach formerly of Santa Clara University, where he spent the last seven seasons. Garson boasts an impressive record from his time as head coach at the College of Idaho, achieving a 129-42 mark with three conference titles and a Final Four run.
- Anthony Wilkins: Assistant coach transitioning from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, having previously collaborated with Pastner at Georgia Tech for five years.
- Hayden Sheridan: Serving as the director of strategy and analytics, Sheridan comes from Georgia Tech, where he worked as the director of scouting and video coordinator for seven seasons.
- DeShawn Henry: Continuing as the director of basketball operations, Henry has been part of the program for six seasons.
Coaching Outlook
Coach Josh Pastner expressed optimism about the newly formed staff, highlighting their diverse skills and dedication. “This coaching staff brings a diverse range of experiences and skills that will be critical for our program’s growth and success,” Pastner stated. “Their energy and tireless work ethic will be key as we continue to construct our roster and prepare for the 2025-26 season and beyond.”
