Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority Launches Marion Bennett Sr. Plaza II
Las Vegas, NV (April 17, 2025) — The Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority (SNRHA) has officially broken ground on its latest affordable housing initiative, Marion Bennett Sr. Plaza, Phase II, located at 1818 Balzar Ave. in Las Vegas.
Honoring a Legacy
The new development is named in memory of Rev. Dr. Marion D. Bennett Sr., a notable civil rights advocate and former Nevada assemblyman who stood alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s. Pastor of Zion United Methodist Church for 45 years, Bennett’s contributions as a community leader live on through this project, which sits adjacent to the first phase of Bennett Plaza.
Project Overview
Marion D. Bennett Sr. Plaza II will encompass:
- 59 apartment homes with one-bedroom units sized at 776 square feet and two-bedroom units at 834 square feet.
- Private balconies for each unit.
- Accessibility features, including five percent designed for full physical accessibility and two percent for residents with hearing and visual impairments.
- A range of amenities such as:
- Activity/social rooms on each floor
- On-site laundry facilities
- A wellness/exam room
- Fitness center and computer/study room
- Outdoor community spaces including public balconies and a terrace area
- Shuffleboard court and onsite storage solutions
The development is anticipated to be finished by summer 2026.
Funding Sources
The financing for this project comes from an array of funding sources, including:
- American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds through the Nevada Housing Division’s Home Means Nevada Initiative.
- Clark County Community Housing Funds.
- SNRHA Capital Funds.
This project prioritizes low-income seniors whose incomes are 30 to 50 percent of the area’s median income (AMI).
Community Impact and Statements
Clark County Commission Chair Tick Segerblom, who also chairs the SNRHA Board, emphasized the importance of this groundbreaking, noting, “Just last month, SNRHA broke ground on two affordable housing communities, and today, we are celebrating yet another addition to our growing portfolio of affordable homes. While we pause to celebrate, we know there is more work to do to address our region’s housing shortage.”
Mayor Shelley Berkley of Las Vegas remarked on the project’s significance: “We appreciate projects like the Marion D. Bennett Sr. Plaza II that we know will be transformational for residents, allowing them to live in comfort, dignity, and safety.”
Retired Justice of the Peace, Karen Bennett-Haron, expressed pride in the project, stating, “My father would be both honored and proud of this new affordable housing community that bears his name.”
