The Nevada Treasury has announced an extension for the submission deadline of the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship for 2025. Interested applicants now have until May 5, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (PST) to apply for the scholarship, which awards $5,000 to two deserving college students from Northern Nevada and two from Southern Nevada. This scholarship targets students majoring in elementary or secondary education with a plan to teach in Nevada post-graduation.

Established in 2011, the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship aims to support exemplary college students in Nevada who are committed to improving public education in the state. Dr. Tya Mathis-Coleman, Deputy Treasurer for College Savings at the Nevada Treasury, stated, “Education is the gateway to a brighter future, and the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship offers a vital opportunity for students to invest in their future career as an educator.” She encourages eligible students to apply, as this scholarship can significantly contribute to their educational and career goals.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Must have satisfied the eligibility requirements of the Millennium Scholarship.
• Must be entering their senior year of study at one of the following institutions:
  • University of Nevada, Reno
  • University of Nevada, Las Vegas
  • Great Basin College
  • Nevada State University
  • A non-profit university that offers bachelor’s degrees to Nevada residents (e.g., Western Governor University, Touro University Nevada)
  • Any other Nevada institution awarding a bachelor’s degree in education.
• Declared major leading to licensure in elementary or secondary education.
• Maintains a minimum college GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 grading scale, or a comparable academic standing verified by the College Savings Board.
• A written commitment to teaching in Nevada after graduation.
• Documented history of community service.
