Weekly Protests in Reno Advocate for Voter Rights and Court Safeguards
April 15, 2023
Gathering for Change
On April 15, approximately 60 protesters, some carrying handmade signs and quilts, assembled outside the Bruce R. Thompson Courthouse and Federal Building in Reno, Nevada. The gathering was organized by Kimberly Carden of Indivisible Northern Nevada, who aims to hold demonstrations every Tuesday, contingent on permit approval.
Advocacy Focus
At the April 15 rally, the protesters expressed their opposition to the SAVE Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act), which mandates that U.S. citizens provide proof of citizenship in person when registering to vote. Carden stated, “Depending on what the topic is for that Tuesday, we fill out a petition to go to each senator, asking them for specific things.” The focus on this day was not only to oppose the SAVE Act but also to call for actions that would preserve the integrity of the courts.
Future Plans
Carden’s initiative reflects a commitment to ongoing advocacy, with plans for protests to continue every Tuesday as long as they can secure the necessary permits. This consistent effort aims to mobilize community support around important legislative issues affecting voting rights and judicial protections.
