Tributes Emerge After Pope’s Death
Messages of condolence are flooding social media and public statements across Nevada in response to the death of Pope Francis. The revered pontiff, who passed away at the age of 88, made significant strides during his papacy, including the establishment of a new American archdiocese in Las Vegas in 2023.
Archbishop Thomas’s Reflection
Archbishop George Leo Thomas of Las Vegas, the first individual to hold this title in the archdiocese, expressed deep sorrow stating, “Pope Francis was a true shepherd of God’s people, a man who lived out his faith with humility, compassion, and courage.” He emphasized the late pope’s teachings about mercy and the imperative to foster a world grounded in love and justice.
Thomas highlighted Francis’s role as “a voice for the voiceless” and noted his commitment to supporting marginalized communities.
Health Challenges and Final Days
Pope Francis had faced health complications throughout his life, including chronic lung disease that followed a lung surgery in his youth. His recent health struggles began on February 14, 2025, when he was hospitalized due to a respiratory crisis that escalated into double pneumonia. This marked the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy at 38 days.
Following his recovery, he returned to lead the church’s Holy Week services, culminating in a farewell appearance in the popemobile at St. Peter’s Square after Easter Mass.
Political Leaders Express Grief
U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat from Nevada and a member of the Catholic faith, expressed her sorrow online. She commented, “I’m deeply saddened by this news, and I join our Church in mourning and prayer for Pope Francis. He led the Catholic Church with humility, compassion, and courage.” Cortez Masto emphasized the pope’s inspiration for advocacy on behalf of the poor, migrants, and universal human rights.
Other notable expressions of grief included sentiments from Senator Jacky Rosen and Representatives Dina Titus and Susie Lee, all of whom echoed appreciation for the pope’s compassionate leadership. Lee remarked, “I loved Pope Francis. I am so sad to hear of his passing… The world lost a great leader who put compassion for all humans above all else.”
