Celebrating Achievements at the Power Within Event
On April 28, 2025, Communities In Schools of Southern Nevada (CIS of Southern Nevada) honored outstanding students at their annual Power Within event. This initiative recognizes students’ academic and personal growth, aligning with CIS’s mission to support over 70,000 students in Clark County.
Student Honorees
Three remarkable students were celebrated for their significant improvements during the 2024-2025 academic year:
-
Elijah Hines, 5th grader at Lois Craig Elementary School:
Elijah’s journey towards improvement has been inspiring. Nominated by Casey Abad, the site coordinator, he has shown commendable progress in academic and social areas since 2023. Initially facing challenges in emotional regulation affected by peer influence, he has transformed under guide and support. Hines has developed self-awareness, demonstrating accountability for his actions and becoming a role model, particularly for his younger brother. -
Khloe McIver, 8th grader at Brinley Middle School:
Under the mentorship of Whitney McClure over two years, Khloe has exemplified perseverance. Her motivation soared when she aimed to join the basketball team, pushing her to achieve the required 2.0 GPA. Through her determination, McIver has not only made the team but continues to strive for academic excellence. -
Tony Valladares, 12th grader at Eldorado High School:
Recipient of transformative mentorship from Ruby Corona since freshman year, Tony has exhibited remarkable resilience. His background in foster care presented challenges in forming lasting connections. However, after a turning point in his junior year, Valladares committed to personal growth, enhancing his leadership skills and securing a driver’s license. Aspiring to study computing and engineering technology, he also hopes to give back by mentoring others facing similar challenges in the future.
Unsung Hero Recognition
Special recognition was awarded to Rocio Ledesma, site coordinator at Eldorado High School, designated as the Martin Serrano “Unsung Hero of the Year.” Her nearly 11-year commitment to uplifting students reflects the values of CIS and honors the legacy of Martin Serrano.
Scholarships and Contributions
Each honoree was awarded a $1,000 scholarship—a direct contribution for high school seniors, ensuring middle and elementary students receive 529 college savings plans. This initiative received support from Foundation XNL and NVIGATE, powered by the Nevada State Treasury.
Community Partnerships and Acknowledgments
CIS also acknowledged significant partners contributing to student success:
- Academy Teacher of the Year: Emilyne Smith, Valley High School
- #AllInForKids Champion/Corporate Partner of the Year: NV Energy Foundation
- Alumni of the Year: Kaylee Main-Gomez, 2020 Graduate of Sunrise Mountain High School
- Programmatic Partner of the Year: Project Marilyn
- Principals of the Year: Henry Rodda (JD Smith Middle School) and Timothy D. Adams (Martinez Elementary School)
Gratitude was expressed to co-presenting sponsors, including Cox Communications and NV Energy Foundation, for making the event possible.
