The Selden: A New Chapter in Reno’s LGBTQ+ Nightlife
Reno’s nightlife is set for an exciting evolution as Tyler Colton, owner of The Emerson, announces the upcoming launch of his new LGBTQ+ bar, The Selden, scheduled for late summer. This initiative comes during a time when inclusivity in nightlife spaces is crucial.
A Legacy of Community at The Emerson
Since its establishment in 2019, The Emerson has distinguished itself as a lively cocktail lounge in Midtown, blending midcentury-modern aesthetics with a welcoming atmosphere. Colton’s vision was clear from the outset: to cultivate a safe and inviting environment where everyone can gather and enjoy themselves.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting costs, and evolving city regulations, The Emerson has thrived. “I think maybe having a child is the only thing that you can relate (opening a bar) to,” Colton stated, emphasizing the nurturing process of developing a community-focused establishment.
The bar has fostered a sense of community, hosting events such as drag brunches, bingo, and themed parties, raising over $45,000 for local charities in the process.
The Vision Behind The Selden
Located across from The Emerson, The Selden aims to be a darker, more cabaret-esque venue, featuring navy walls and early ’70s decor that reflects Colton’s unique style. This new space will cater to dance parties, burlesque shows, and other vibrant community events.
Colton expressed his commitment to inclusivity, stating, “It will be a cabaret dance, all-inclusive, just a sexy upscale bar. Whether you’re gay or straight, everyone’s in there.”
Navigating Challenges for Inclusivity
The current socio-political climate presents challenges for LGBTQ+ spaces. Colton has been vocal about the threats faced by the community, including personal safety concerns. His determination to protect patrons has led to measures such as enhanced security, including staff and surveillance, to ensure safety.
“I have been followed to my car. I have been doxxed on Reddit. I have been hacked on social media,” Colton noted, emphasizing the need for vigilance in the face of increasing hostility.
His experience, stemming from both a deep personal history with the Northern Nevada community and challenges he’s faced, fuels his passion for creating safe spaces.
Advocating for Equitable Treatment
Colton is also addressing regulatory hurdles as he navigates city codes, seeking equitable treatment for small businesses. He is advocating for the same privileges granted to larger enterprises, such as extended hours for live entertainment, to level the playing field.
The City Council has recently approved a conditional use permit favoring larger entities; Colton aims to replicate this support for The Selden, signaling a need for community and city officials to collaborate with local entrepreneurs.
