Robert Spencer Davidson’s Sculpture Unveiled in Downtown Summerlin
On April 10, 2025, Howard Hughes Holdings, Inc. introduced a remarkable new public artwork, Sun Kissed, created by Southern Nevada artist Robert Spencer Davidson. This installation is the centerpiece of the new Whole Foods Market retail center situated in Downtown Summerlin, a vibrant urban community covering 400 acres.
About the Sculpture
Standing proudly at over 33 feet, Sun Kissed is designed to serve as a striking insignia for the new 7.4-acre retail area located at the intersection of Sahara Blvd. and Town Center Drive. This impressive sculpture is crafted from a resilient combination of metabolized acrylic urethane composite, steel, and concrete, ensuring its durability amidst the extreme weather conditions characteristic of Southern Nevada.
Artist Background
Robert Spencer Davidson, a resident of Southern Nevada since the early 1960s, has had a profound impact on the local art community. His selection for this project followed a formal Request for Proposal process, where his design was chosen for its aesthetic appeal and potential to symbolize the area. Davidson shared, “My design was inspired by my love of living in Southern Nevada, my respect for the progressive and responsible way in which Summerlin has been developed…”
Sculpture Significance
Davidson explained that the vibrant orange coating of Sun Kissed is intended to create a dynamic visual effect as it reflects sunlight, giving it the appearance of dancing under daylight. This artistic choice is a nod to the region’s natural beauty, further solidifying the sculpture’s role as a beacon of optimism and progress.
Community Engagement and Development
Danielle Bisterfeldt, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Consumer Experience at Summerlin, expressed excitement about integrating Davidson’s artwork into the evolving narrative of the community. “As we continue to develop Summerlin, we remain committed to showcasing local talent…” she stated, highlighting the importance of public art in enhancing community engagement.
Retail Center Features
The Whole Foods Market retail center, which includes environmentally-friendly features such as electric vehicle charging stations and is aiming for LEED Silver certification, is set to become a welcoming destination for residents of Downtown Summerlin, including those from nearby neighborhoods.
Construction Timeline
Construction of the Downtown Summerlin retail space commenced in September 2023, and major openings, including Whole Foods Market and Starbucks, are anticipated throughout 2025.
