Ty Segall to Perform Intimate Acoustic Set in Reno
On Thursday, May 1, renowned garage and psychedelic rock artist Ty Segall will lighten the mood with an acoustic performance at Cypress Reno starting at 6 p.m.
Transitioning to Acoustic Sounds
Known for his powerful electric guitar performances, Segall is set to explore a softer side of his artistry. The acoustic tour promises to provide fresh interpretations of some of his previous works, as well as original songs crafted for this format.
In a recent phone interview, Segall stated, “I definitely write a lot of songs on the acoustic. I’d say it depends on the record and depends on the vibe, but there have been full albums that I’ve written on the acoustic, for sure.” This aligns with how he typically translates his acoustic creations into electric compositions.
New Life for Classic Tracks
Fans can expect to hear previously high-octane tracks reimagined for this acoustic setting. For instance, “Finger” will have a more somber tone, while “You’re the Doctor” will transform from an energetic anthem into a more mellow, foot-stomping rendition. “Some of these songs work really well in this setting and not in the band setting, or vice versa,” explained Segall, highlighting the flexibility of his setlist.
Looking Forward to an Acoustic Tour
Segall expressed excitement about performing in smaller venues and connecting with different audiences during this tour. His previous experiences on solo acoustic tours with his wife have fostered a love for this more personal performance style.
“When I’m out playing, I want to play, so the main thing is to play… it’s a little bit more flexible on a solo acoustic tour,” he mentioned, indicating a sense of freedom and adaptability on this journey.
Upcoming Album and Preview
This concert arrives just weeks before the release of his new album, titled Possession. The preview single, “Fantastic Tomb,” showcases Segall’s evolving sound with elements of twangy guitar, cosmic country influences, and orchestral touches. “I love the idea that a song has endless versions,” Segall remarked, reinforcing his belief in diverse expressions of his music.
Future Collaborations and Industry Insights
This fall, Segall will also join forces with the esteemed funk-metal band Primus for a tour, reflecting his ongoing commitment to live performance. “They’ve actually asked us to play with them a handful of times, and it’s never worked out,” he shared, underscoring the excitement surrounding this opportunity.
Observing the current music landscape, Segall noted, “The way it works nowadays is something needs to be booked more than a year in advance.” With the complexities of the post-COVID music industry, he emphasized the importance of forward planning in maintaining an active career.
Discography and Personal Reflections
Overall, Segall has amassed an impressive body of work, with 16 studio albums to his name, alongside numerous projects with other bands. He maintains a varied relationship with his discography, noting, “Some records, I pay attention; some records, I don’t.” This reflective stance highlights his artistic growth.
Despite occasionally regretting a lack of complete personal collections from his early career, Segall maintains a philosophy that prioritizes creation over accumulation, stating, “I made it to go out into the world; I didn’t make it for me to keep it in my record collection.”
