National Osteopathic Medicine Week: Honoring the Future of Healthcare
From April 14-20, we celebrate National Osteopathic Medicine Week, a time to recognize the transformative role of osteopathic medicine in healthcare. Touro University Nevada, the first medical school to offer the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree in Southern Nevada since its founding in 2014, stands at the forefront of this movement.
Osteopathic Medicine: A Proactive Approach
Founded in the United States in 1874, osteopathic medicine emphasizes a holistic, patient-centered philosophy. It focuses not only on treating current ailments but also on promoting wellness and encouraging the body’s natural ability to heal. This approach aims to identify health risks early, potentially preventing serious health issues.
Touro University Nevada: A Leader in Osteopathic Education
This year, Touro University Nevada will graduate over 160 students from its College of Osteopathic Medicine, which has achieved an impressive 99.4% match rate for residency placements. This success mirrors a nationwide trend where 8,049 osteopathic students recorded a 92.6% match rate, reflecting a modest increase of 0.3% from the previous year. Over the last decade, the number of osteopathic physicians in the U.S. has increased by more than 70%, according to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Understanding the Differences: DO vs. MD
Patients may come across the designation ‘DO’ more frequently as healthcare evolves. While both DOs and MDs are fully licensed and qualified to practice in all medical specialties, they have distinct differences:
Shared Foundations
- Both DOs and MDs use evidence-based methods for diagnosis and treatment.
- Both complete four years of medical education followed by residency programs, which can last three to seven years depending on the specialty.
- Both are required to pass standardized licensing examinations.
Distinct Approaches
- DOs receive over 200 hours of hands-on training specifically focused on the musculoskeletal system and its treatment through Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT).
- OMT is a non-invasive technique aimed at reducing pain, enhancing mobility, and improving overall health while promoting the body’s natural healing processes.
Collaboration for Optimal Care
The commitment of Touro Nevada’s DO students extends beyond their training. They collaborate with various healthcare professionals to advocate for their patients’ needs, integrating a unique perspective that enhances treatment outcomes and promotes overall well-being.
