Apple's Foldable iPhone Signals New Direction for Premium Smartphone Market
Apple has introduced its first foldable iPhone, opening a new chapter for the company's smartphone business and intensifying competition in one of the technology industry's most closely watched emerging categories.
The iPhone Duo was unveiled during Apple's major product event in Cupertino, California, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The presentation also marked the first major iPhone launch under Chief Executive Officer John Ternus.
The foldable device combines the functions of a conventional smartphone with the larger display experience associated with tablets. Its external display can be used when the phone is closed, while unfolding the device reveals a 7.6-inch internal screen.
Apple has developed a new hinge and titanium enclosure for the device. The iPhone Duo also uses two batteries and the company's A20 Pro processor.
The company has adapted its mobile operating system to support the new hardware configuration. Applications can take advantage of the larger display when the device is unfolded, giving users more space for multitasking, entertainment and productivity.
Apple's entry into foldable phones is significant from a business perspective because competitors have already spent years developing the category. Samsung has established one of the strongest positions in foldable smartphones, while other manufacturers have introduced competing designs in markets around the world.
Apple's approach could alter the competitive landscape because the company controls both its hardware and operating-system environment. That allows it to design the physical device and software together rather than relying on a separate platform developer.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, placing it firmly in the premium segment. The price reflects the additional complexity associated with foldable displays and hinge systems while also positioning the product as a high-end alternative rather than a replacement for Apple's standard iPhone models.
The company also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Those devices include the A20 Pro chip, upgraded camera hardware and expanded artificial-intelligence capabilities.
Apple has continued to invest heavily in AI features as competition among technology companies increasingly focuses on personal assistants and generative computing. New Siri capabilities are being integrated into the broader Apple Intelligence platform, with some processing performed directly on devices and more demanding functions handled through Apple's cloud infrastructure.
The product strategy shows that Apple is pursuing two major technology themes at the same time: new hardware formats and AI-powered software.
The foldable iPhone is particularly important because smartphones have become increasingly mature products. Annual improvements in processing speed, cameras and battery efficiency remain significant, but consumers may not see each generation as fundamentally different from the previous one.
A foldable design provides Apple with a more visible change in how the device is used.
For the technology industry, Apple's entry could also encourage greater investment in foldable components. Manufacturers of flexible displays, hinges, batteries and specialized protective materials could benefit if demand for foldable devices expands.
However, the product also faces challenges. Foldable smartphones are generally more expensive than conventional models, and consumers must become comfortable with the additional thickness, moving components and different screen configuration.
The device's success will therefore depend on more than technical specifications. Apple must demonstrate that the larger display offers enough practical value to justify the higher price.
The company's established ecosystem could help. Consumers already using Apple services, accessories and other devices may find it easier to integrate a foldable iPhone into their existing technology environment.
The launch also comes at an important moment for Apple's leadership. Ternus, a longtime hardware executive, is beginning his tenure as CEO with a product that represents a substantial physical redesign of the company's most important device.
The iPhone Duo is therefore both a product launch and a strategic statement. Apple is entering a market where competitors have already established products while attempting to differentiate itself through hardware, software integration and its existing customer base.
The broader business question is whether foldable smartphones can become a major premium category rather than remain a niche segment.
Apple's launch gives the industry a powerful new participant. Consumer demand over the coming months will determine whether the company's first foldable device becomes a milestone in smartphone design or remains a specialized product within the wider iPhone portfolio.
